Description

An extremely intricate classical antique Mohtasham Kashan rug woven in Kashan around 1880-1890. These rugs were woven with the finest merino wool which is extremely soft to touch and helped the weavers produce these fine and beautifully detailed rugs. The detail on this rug is quite outstanding all the flowing vines and floral motifs intwine around the vivid central medallion.  The palette is wonderful, with warm reds which have a soft abrash 3/4 of the way through the rug, the perfect charm for an antique piece.

. . .

The olive deep green tones are a typical Mohtasham colour as is the deep indigo blues.  A fantastic example in remarkable original condition, the soft merino wool pile is very high all over the rug.  Minimal wear around the edges of the rug but no significant losses to anywhere.  We have cleaned the rug throughly and it has enhanced the colours and softened the wool further.  Please do see all the additional images to see its quality.

Kashan was a center of silk production since Safavid times and some of the best classical Persian silk rugs have been attributed to Kashan. At the end of the nineteenth century the weavers there began to produce high quality wool rugs and carpets as well, which continued the high standards of design and technique established in the classical era. The very best Kashan carpets and rugs are known as Mohtasham.
