Antique Heriz carpet

Circa 1890
400 × 265 cm 13’1” x 8’8”
£13,500

Description

This is a stunning rustic antique Heriz carpet woven in the late 19th century with beautiful colours.  The pale blue corners are vibrant and lift the whole palette of warm terracotta brick tones and deep blue border.  Some wonderful green dyes can be seen too, golden yellows have been used too.  The border design is unusual to see on a Heriz, it is reminiscent of a Caucasian border design from Azerbaijan know as the crab border.  With the large floral motif in the centre and four geometric leaves protruding out from it.

It is getting increasingly rare to find antique Persian Heriz carpets of this high quality in such original condition.  Ideal for a drawing room, dining room, study or entrance hall, included in the price is our sturdy underlay, helping sit safely and flat on any floor type, enhancing its appearance too.  The wool pile is lush and in great order all over on this 130 year old stunning carpet.

Request a home visit to view this stunning antique Heriz carpet in the privacy of your own home. We travel all over the UK showing our carpets and rugs in-situ, a professional service we have offered for the last 30 years.

Book in a showroom visit if preferred, we are open Monday to Saturday 9.30-5.30pm by appointment.  As it is best to make a time to make sure someone is here to help you and show you this Heriz.

. . .

50 kilometres south of the city of Heriz lies another city called Sharabian.  This city was known for producing much finer and tightly woven Heriz carpets with intricate designs and excellent dyes. Woven in East Azerbaijan (North-West Persia) these decorative Heriz carpets have always been regarded as beautiful, tough objects of decoration for the floor.  This piece is no exception, beautifully hand-woven which gorgeous colours of yellow, pale blues and warm red tones.  In outstanding condition throughout, this carpet has been used over the last 100 years and has just been professionally washed by our workshop.

The reason Heriz rugs are so tough is that Mount Sabalan is located close to Heriz and sits on a major deposit of copper. Traces of copper in the drinking water for the sheep produces high quality wool that is far more resilient than wool from other areas.
