Antique Farahan carpet

Circa 1880
283 × 256 cm 9’3” x 8’4”
£25,000

Description

An alsmost square, early antique Farahan carpet with a beautifully drawn scrolling border design with the large scale turtle design on a madder red to lighter toned red at the top. This is not a repair, it is merely known as an abrash, which is where the weavers have used different dyed wool and over the last 120 years it has changed and faded.  This creates a lot of depth and character to an antique carpet, with modern carpets copying this technique to make them look much older.  An ancient carpet woven around 1880, rich in colour and with the famous herati all over design on a deep blue almost black in places main background colour.  Amazing square size, Fereghan or Farahan as they are often known were one of few weaving areas that produced square sizes.

Fereghan carpets are generally one of two types, the first being a full field decoration of floral motifs based on Persian designs, most commonly with the geometric ‘Herati’ design.  The second has a full medallion, usually with a contrasting colour, the edge of which is surrounded by a zig zag or jagged border. The dyes have mellowed beautifully due to the carpets age allowing it to be placed in a drawing room or dining room with ease.
