Antique Agra carpet

Description

A very unusual square sized Indian Agra carpet.  The colours used are superb, with a restrained palette of only 5 colours.  The ground is a warm burgundy colour, with two rows of repeating palmettes in soft greys, outlined with a typical Agra old white.  The border is fabulous being the same colour as the field, which adds to the all-over look.

Lacking a central medallion, this carpet is easily placed into a variety of room shapes, whether the furniture be centralised on the carpet, or off centre, the lack of medallion enables it to placed wherever you wish, without restriction.

This carpet has lovely age-related corrosion to the black dyes – a very natural occurrence when iron salt (ferrous sulphate) is used together with acorn cups to create the dark colours required.  Over a hundred years, this dye has corroded the wool, creating a lower pile – see this in the close up images attached.  The carpet remains In great condition with some small localised wear which will be professionally restored.

We offer the service of viewing any of our carpets & rugs in-situ in London, Surrey, Hampshire & the UK by appointment.  We also will ship worldwide and have sent carpets as far as Hong Kong safely and securely with our expert shippers.

From the 16th century, during the Mughal Empire carpet weaving was influenced by the Persian weavers which resided in Agra, India.  Designs on Agra carpets vary considerably, but Persian floral motifs from Tabriz and Ziegler were often used.  The British revival in the 19th century bought back the production of oriental rugs after the collapse of the Mughal Empire due to high demand for export.
