Antique Mahal carpet

Circa 1890
516 × 300 cm 16’11” x 9’10”
£28,500

Description

A finely woven antique Mahal carpet from 1890-1900 in fabulous condition, an excellent wool pile all over and with a beautifully drawn and woven all over design.  The green dyes are a particular highlight of the palette, on the deep indigo blue background they really lift the whole carpets feel and combined with lovely red and off white tones, this makes a decorative carpet to place in any rooms.

A great size too this would be ideal for a drawing room or dining room for example, having lived in a dining room for many years, it looked wonderful with an oak table on it.  Professionally washed, the pile is fantastic and ready to be used for another 100 years.

This carpet has been in an important private collection for over 20 years and is fresh to the market.  A unique opportunity to purchase a Tabriz carpet of this quality and in outstanding original condition.

Contact us to arrange a viewing, we would love to show you this antique Mahal carpet at home or in our showroom soon.

. . .

Mahal carpets were produced in Sultanabad, Persia which is now Arak in the centre of Iran. Mahal and Sultanabad rugs were made in the same area as the earliest Farahan and Sarouk, but they are very different in form and structure. Floral motifs and overall designs of vine scrolls and palmettes remain consistent with the influences of western color palettes and are all characteristics of Ziegler carpets.
