Antique Karaja rug

Circa 1890
184 × 146 cm 6’ x 4’9”
£4,500

Description

An ancient Karaja rug from circa 1890-1900 fine and the region of northern Persia. The border is a rich madder orange/red with lovely rare greens used in the the two eight-pointed star design motifs in the main field.   A central off white latch-hook medallion, surrounded by scattered tribal designs.  In good order with a lower pile this rug does have some minimal wear, but it has a wonderful ancient look and still very useable and durable.  We supply strong anti-slip underlay which aids the rug and prevents wear to antique rugs.

Request a home visit below to arrange a convenient day and time to view this antique Karaja rug in-situ.  We travel all over the UK, from Scotland to London as well as visiting Europe showing our inventory to designers and customers.

Purchase this antique Karaja rug online and we can deliver it to your home, or please organise a visit to our showroom.  We are open Monday to Saturday 9.30-5.30pm by appointment and would love to welcome you here.

Karaja carpets and rugs were woven in a village in the northeast of the Heriz region of Persia, not far from the Azerbaijan Border.  The rugs often use 8 pointed star motifs and sometimes they weave in animals and people which adds great interest. They are easily recognisable with three repeating medallions similar to those in caucasian rugs. The central motif has the latch-hooked design and the other two are eight-pointed stars.  This large carpet has more of a Heriz design and early Serapi colours mixing all three designs in many ways.
