Description

An unusual carpet in terms of colour on this antique Sultanabad carpet, Persia making it a unique and very individual piece.  A spacious design has been used with soft white, greens, yellows and pale blues on a main field of warm red/terracotta.  These types of antique rugs look at home in both traditional and modern rooms.  The condition is good, with no major areas of restoration just a few small lower areas of pile.

. . .

A carpet that is still very robust and with good pile, these hundred year old carpets have already withstood a lot of use so they will be great for many more years to come.

Antique Sultanabad carpets are very important in the history of weaving as Sultanabad was formally known as Arak which was once the capital of Persia in the 1800’s. Famous carpets such as Ziegler were woven in Sultanabad by the company Ziegler & Co which produced open large floral designs for western tastes and thrived in the late 19th century exporting these carpets to the US and Europe. Sultanabad carpets are know as older better quality Mahals woven from the mid to late 19th century there pile is much flatter than the younger Mahal carpets and using softer colours rather than the typical reds and blues we associate with most Persian carpets.
