Description

A super pretty antique Mahal carpet with a lovely open all design and woven with the rare white background, most Mahal or Sultanabad carpets where woven using richer deeper blues and reds as the main field colour.  The all over pattern of vines and floral motifs is really beautiful and with natural dyes.  This carpet dates from around circa 1900 with the condition being exceptional, the wool pile is excellent with a high wool pile throughout.  A very decorative and easy carpet to place in a room already finished, or to build a scheme around.

. . .

Mahal carpets were produced in Sultanabad, Persia which is now Arak in the center of Iran. Mahal and Sultanabad rugs were made in the same area as the earliest Fereghans and Sarouks, but they are very different in form and structure. Floral motifs and overall designs of vine scrolls and palmettes remain consistent with the influences of western color palettes and are all characteristics of Ziegler carpets.
