Description

A rare fine antique Serapi rug woven around 1880-1890 in the north-west of Persia.  Serapi rugs are woven in the Heriz region of Persia and generally are older, finer examples of these tribal weavings.  They use amazing colours and natural ivory dyes whereas Heriz are famous for reds and blues. Both weavings use bold geometric designs and this rug has stunning dye change throughout.

. . .

In good condition with a finely cut low pile all over.  Both ends have been professionally restored as they were missing a little bit, about 5 rows of knots.  They have been done extremely well and given the rug its complete frame and preserved/added to its value.

Antique Serapi carpets are more intricate finer tribal weavings of the Heriz region hand-woven by Azerbaijan Turkish inhabitants close to the city of Heriz in North-West Persia. They are famous among collectors because of their vivid vegetable dyes or soft earth tones that are woven on a geometric pattern.  In terms of design, drawing, and coloration as well, Serapi carpets are clearly part of one and the same tradition as Heriz, despite being a distinct antique rug style, which originated as a Northwest Persian adaptation of early Sarouk Farahan medallion, but with a more geometric, abstract, village sensibility.  On the whole, it appears that what we call Serapi carpets are simply the oldest, most well-designed, and finely woven Heriz carpets.
